Taking the high ground: SberPortal first Russian smart device to receive Red Dot Award

Apr 12, 2021

Smart display SberPortal has received two prizes at the international Red Dot Awards 2021, becoming the first Russian device to be acknowledged in the Smart Products metacategory, and got an award for Product Design. This year, the Red Dot Jury noted the exceptional quality of the SberPortal smart screen’s design solutions, created by SberDevices together with the product design house notAnotherOne.

Red Dot Award is one of the most prestigious international seals of quality in the global design industry. Between June 2021 and May 2022, together with the other winners, SberPortal will be on display in the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen and in the online presentation. The museum in Essen houses one of the world’s largest exhibitions of industrial design.

SberPortal is the result of the coordinated and cohesive work of a large team. We at SberDevices sought to create a device that would set a lasting standard for smart displays both in terms of ergonomics and in terms of functionality. SberPortal combines frontier technologies and contemporary industrial design trends in a unique body. Every solution, every detail has an aim, and together they make for a balanced, multifunctional smart home device. We are very pleased that our meticulous work was so highly commended by the Red Dot Award Jury. This is global recognition.

In focus: ergonomics and user experience

SberDevices prioritizes the development of coherent devices that are capable of making user-Salyut virtual assistant interaction happen as best as possible. The main goal when developing SberPortal was ensuring an end-to-end user experience in a multimodal interface. The device needed to be not only useful to clients, but also aesthetically pleasing. To achieve this, the designers needed to build an interface that would enable users to interact with the virtual assistants in all situations: using gestures, their voice, touch, and even a virtual remote control. SberPortal became the first and most complete device on the market to use a multimodal control model that facilitates access to the assistants.

The designers were confronted with the task of having to construct a visually weightless device that effortlessly blends in with any interior. They based the concept design on simple geometric forms – the spherical acoustic system and rectangular display, which together created a distinctive visual image, singling SberPortal out as a unique device – a smart display with amazing sound quality.

Smart design

Smart Product awards recognize combinations of stellar technological solutions and outstanding design. In 2020, Smart Product awards were also given to global market leaders like Apple, Braun, Hansgrohe, and Philips.

Products in this metacategory are evaluated from the point of view of their design, but also functionality, user interface, and value. SberPortal swept two accolades, one for the ultimate design, and the other one as the best smart device, which proves that SberDevices has cutting-edge competencies in designing multimodal interfaces and user experience. The device is equally great in design and functionality.

Red Dot Award: Product Design, whose origins date back to 1955, appraises the best products in over 50 categories. The Red Dot Jury comprises some 50 international experts. They test, discuss and evaluate each entry individually by applying the following criteria: degree of innovation, functionality, formal quality, ergonomics, durability, emotional content, ecological compatibility, etc.

Product Design (known as Innovations Award until 2000) is the oldest category of the award, which used to be the only category up until 1993. Traditionally, competition in the product design category is extremely severe. In addition to finding the paragon of product design, jurors evaluate a product in terms of the quality of parts, functional features of a device and its impact on the design industry at large. Today, awards are handed out in three main categories: Product Design, Communication Design, and Design Concept.

The award ceremony is scheduled for June 21, 2021, during Red Dot Design Week.
